On June 25.1943,rnHandley Pagernchief test pilot FltrnLt James Talbot flew the smallrnresearch aircraft for the first time at the company's airfield at Radlett in Hertfordshire. The H.P.75 was the brainchild of Dr Gustav Lachmann, H.P.'s head of research, who, upon the declaration of war, had been detained as a German national. His replacement, 30-year-old Godfrey H. Lee, a great enthusiast of tailless aircraft, was delighted when Talbot reported that the H.P.75 flew well but had high drag owingto its fixed undercarriage.
