Sir michael beetham was the last Chief of the Air Staff to have flown operationally in the Second World War, and this authorised biography is a fitting tribute. Joining the RAF as a Volunteer Reserve trainee pilot, he was sent to the USA as part of the Arnold Scheme, training in Georgia on Stearman PT-17s. He soloed after 14 lessons, then passing on to twins, namely the Curtiss-Wright AT-9 Fledgling and Cessna AT-17, a military version of the T-50, familiar to UK readers as the Bobcat.
