Boeing's 'bargain basement' 720

When boeing's Dash 80 first flew in 1954, the company was thinking of a family of jets to cover the entire market. Boeing had already begun work on a short- to medium-range aircraft, which bore several names along the way; it would eventually emerge as the Boeing Model 720. This was effectively a cut-down and significantly lightened 707, which still retained the wide cabin so as to offer six-abreast seating. It was 8ft 4in shorter than a standard 707 and carried less fuel (11,835 US gal -1,643 US gal less). It also had a different wing fitted with Krueger flaps to enhance operation from shorter regional runways.
