Formed from the outset as a fighter unit, 20 Sqn, Royal Flying Corps (RFC), was created from 7 Reserve Aeroplane Squadron at Netheravon, Wiltshire, on September 1, 1915, under the command of Maj C.W. Wilson. The first aircraft types to arrive were the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c and Curtiss JN-3; the Martinsyde S.I Scout followed in October. By mid-December 1915 the squadron had moved to Filton, Bristol, where it was re-equipped with Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b, becoming the first RFC unit to do so. With these machines 20 Sqn fully entered the First World War, when it was moved to St Omer, France, on January 16, 1916, before settling at Clairmarais a week later.
