US N celebrates aviation centenary

The centenary of us Naval Aviation was celebrated with a huge Open House event and Parade of Flight flypast at North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, on February 12. North Island is the birthplace of American Naval Aviation. On January 26,1911, Glenn CurtissflewaCurtiss III "hydroaeroplane" from the waters of San Diego Bay, and three weeks later, on February 17,1911, taxied the machine up beside the cruiser USS Pennsylvania, anchored in the bay. The machine was hoisted aboard the ship, then lowered back into the water, before Glenn Curtiss headed back to the shore at North Island. This event finally convinced the Secretary of the Navy to purchase the USN's first aircraft, a Curtiss A-1 Triad.
