All was calm aboard Lt William D. Whitsun's Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress OMB///, of the 305th Bomb Group, United States Army Air Force, as a force of 76 bombers from the 1st Bombardment Wing set course for targets of opportunity along the Dutch and German coasts on May 15, 1943. As well as the normal crew often, photographer S/Sgt George H. Friend was also on board. Now that they were beyond the range of friendly fighters, any contrails seen from this point on could only be made by enemy aircraft. They did not have to wait long. Seconds after they had dropped their 4,500lb bomb load on Heligoland, the unfriendly contrails began to appear, left by a Staffel of Focke-Wulf Fw 190s as they lined up for their traditional head-on attack.
