Ihad such a strong desire to serve in the RAF, that for me there was little option but to join the ATC as soon as I could. So in 19801 enrolled with No 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn, with former Hunter pilot Fit Lt D. Edge as CO. It wasn't long before I was studying the principles of flight and learning more about RAF aircraft, all of which was readily welcomed. Then, in April 1981, came my first eagerly awaited flight in a DHC Chipmunk T.10, WB692. Generally we flew with No 5 Air Experience Flight, Cambridge. However, as 1084 had won the coveted Lees Trophy in 1980, in June 1981 I was one of the lucky cadets to get an extra week's camp at RAF Newton. As part of this, instead of the standard 30-minute air experience flight, we were all to plan a navigation exercise to fly a Chipmunk from Newton over our houses.
