Finding a new way to focus the content of a publication on the much-written about Operation Chastise of May 16/17, 1943 is a challenge, as so many books have been produced on the subject. However this, the third in Fighting High's "Failed to Return" series (which follows Bomber Command - Failed to Return and a second volume), does just that by solely recounting the lives of some of the 617 Sqn "Dam Busters" who failed to return home from what is arguably the single most famous aerial operation in history. For the famous "Dams" raid, 19 Lancasters set off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire on this audacious low-level strike against industrial dams in Germany's Ruhr valley. During the operation eight of the Lancasters were lost, and of the 56 airmen on board those aircraft 53 were killed and three became prisoners of war.
