Corsair MOH pilot revisits North Korea

Medal of Honor recipient and former naval aviator Thomas J. Hudner returned to North Korea in July for an attempt to locate the scene of his celebrated act of valour, reports Richard Mallory Allnutt. His mission is to locate and recover the remains of his fellow pilot, Ensign Jesse Brown, the first African American naval officer to die in the Korean War (see The Hudner Corsair, page 98 of this issue). On December 4, 1950, Ensign Brown and Lt Hudner were part of a flight of six VF-32 Vought Corsairs from the USS Leyte ranging low over the Chosin Reservoirduringthe height of the war's fiercest ground battle. Brown's Corsair received damage, probably from small arms fire, and he had to put the fighter down on a snow-laden.
