Six years after construction began, mechanical engineer and Light Aircraft Association Inspector David Beale has completed Percival E.2H Mew Gull reproduction G-HEKL in his workshop near Ely in Cambridgeshire. The exquisite 1930s racer will make its first flight just as soon as the paperwork has been completed. David has built his Mew to represent Charles Gardner's Mew Gull, G-AEKL, which won the King's Cup race at Hatfield in September 1937 at an average speed of 233.7 m.p.h. The following July Alex Henshaw won the King's Cup at the same airfield in his Mew Gull G-AEXF, achieving an average speed 3 m.p.h. faster.
