Sir Frederick William Page CBE, FRS, FREng (1917-2005)

Born in Wimbledon, Frederick "Freddie" Page was one of the nation's most successful aircraft designers who first joined Hawker in 1938, under Sidney Camm. After working on the Hurricane, Typhoon and Tempest, he joined English Electric as an assistant to "Teddy" Petter. Page was heavily involved in the Canberra and following Petter's departure in 1950, was promoted to chief engineer just as the P.1 programme was gaining momentum. After successfully seeing the P.1 through to the Lightning in service, Page was then involved in the TSR.2, the Jaguar and Tornado, before he retired as chairman and chief executive of British Aerospace in 1982.
