In the 1950s and '60s I kept my Proctor at Den ham and spent a lot of time at the airfield. One day in March 1962, the chief engineer asked me if I would do the Certificate of Airworthiness air test on a Miles Nighthawk, G-AGWT, which he had just overhauled. I was a bit suspicious of it because, among other things, it had been modified by fitting a Proctor undercarriage, which involved boring larger holes in the main spar to take thicker bolts, which must have weakened the spar. Also, the compass was missing, as it was still with the overhaulers.
