An amazing total often Douglas C-47/DC-3s, from nine countries, gathered at Cherbourg's Maupertus airport on June 4 for the Normandy 70th anniversary commemorations. Several of the aircraft were configured for parachute dropping, both static line and freefall, and many commemorative drops were made over the following days at significant sites, including Ranville and Sainte-Mere-Eglise Two aircraft flew in from the USA on the North Atlantic ferry route via Goose Bay, Nararsuaq and Reykjavik. The 1941 Historical Aircraft Group of the National Warplane Museum, New York brought C-47A Skytrain N345AB, Whiskey 7 over from Geneseo, upper New York State, arriving at Prestwick, Scotland on May 20. This aircraft flew with the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron on June 6,1944, transporting paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division to drop zones near Sainte-Mere Eglise, and during the anniversary events made multiple missions, dropping members of the Liberty Jump Team, whose base is at Roanoke, Texas.
