By 1904 the Balloon Factory at Aldershot, underthe command of Lt Col J.L. Templer, had outgrown its surroundings, when it was ordered to build a 'balloon dirigible', forcing the army to look for an alternative site, preferably not too far away. The Army did not have to look far, as a suitable piece of land just two miles north was found on the north-eastern edge of Farnborough Common, west of Farnborough Road, although this site was only meant to be a temporary location.
