Deliveries of the first P-82Bs commenced from November 1945 and were completed by March 1946. They were officially accepted by the USAAF between January 1946 and March 1947 and rather than being delivered to a single unit, all were assigned far and wide. Although designated as trainers, all found themselves involved with various "guinea-pig" style trials. The P-82B Twin Mustang did not have an "official" home until the formation of the 27th Fighter Wing (FW), Strategic Air Command (SAC), at Kearney AAF (Army Airfield), Nebraska, on July 28,1947, which was also equipped with the P-51D Mustang.
