Construction of a huge, 279,861ft2 new National Military Museum (NMM) at the former airbase of Soesterberg, nine miles east of Utrecht in Holland, is on target for a grand opening in October. During early February the first aircraft to arrive on site were moved from the nearby Dutch Air Force Museum at Camp van Zeist, on the outskirts of the village of Soesterberg. The NMM, construction of which began in January 2013, will bring together under one roof the collections of the Army Museum at Delft, and the Air Force Museum, which was originally opened at Soesterberg in 1968 and moved to Camp van Zeist in 1980. Soesterberg was formally closed as an operational base in December 1981, although gliding still takes place from the historic site.
