MOST READERS WILL no doubt associate Convair with the B-24 Liberator and PBY Catalina, with total production of the two types amounting to almost 9,100. Beginning life as Consolidated, the company merged with Vultee in March 1943 and became Convair, although surprisingly the name was not formalised until 1954 by which time it had become a Division of General Dynamics. This book covers early aircraft and design studies under the sub-title Secret Fighters, Attack Aircraft and Unique Concepts 1929-1973. They include some recognisable types such as the Vultee Vanguard, the XP-55 twin-boom pusher fighter and theXP-81 turboprop/ turbojet fighter, passing through a wide variety of projects some of which reached hardware stage such as the XF-92A delta-wing fighter, forerunner of the production F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart.
