Dave Eagles, then a test pilot at Boscombe Down with the A&AEE's 'C' Squadron, recalls the unfortunate mishap involving XR220. "I was taxiing back to the 'C' Squadron dispersal on 9 September 1964 in a Sea Vixen. And there, close to the hangar door of 'C Squadron, was the fuselage of TSR2 XR220, still attached to the Queen Mary trailer, on its side and with the tow truck still upright. It had turned very tightly back on itself, presumably to position the trailer for unloading close to the door. I did not see the actual event and there was already a group of interested people gathering around. I remember seeing the bare tailplane spigot close to the concrete.
