It's not an entirely happy story, that of British airliners in preservation. The flag carrier scrapped most of its own collection; of those airframes held by national institutions, few are on public display. This renders crucial the often unsung efforts of Duxford Aviation Society, its charges now constituting by far the best and most extensive selection of UK-built commercial aircraft open regularly to view. Yet this is, no-one should forget, a private charitable organisation. It receives no state funding - despite their location at IWM Duxford, the aircraft are solely DAS's property. Of national significance they may be, but part of the wider national collection they are not.
