The Fairchild 71 carried on the progressive development of the company's FC-2W2 light transport. Following on from the subsequent FC-2, which first flew in 1926, there came the FC-2W, which later evolved into the Model 71. The latter was given a longer wingspan and more cargo or passenger capacity in its cabin. It measures 36ft long and has a 50ft wingspan.
