Military Moths

Jnanuary 1926 was a month much devoted to military interest in the Moth. The Royal Australian Air Force had ordered two DH60s in June 1925 for evaluation by No 1 Flying Training School at Point Cook. Although A7-1 crashed there in November 1926 and A7-2 was written off by No 3 Squadron at Richmond, they had achieved their primary task: that of successful evaluation as initial trainers for military pilots. Frederick Handley Page persuaded the Air Ministry to order a single machine,J8030 (233), and to equip it with his company's patented slot apparatus. The happy marriage with the device in its final form was to prove beneficial to the Moth's reputation as an established training aeroplane. DH60J8030 was the first of three ordered by the Air Ministry. The othertwoaircraft,J8031 (247) and J8032 (248), were positioned directly to the Central Flying School (CFS) to begin an evaluation process.
