P-51D Janie wrecked in fatal crash

During the afternoon of 2 October at Hardwick Airfield near Bungay, Suffolk, P-51D Mustang 45-11518/G-MSTG Janie was wrecked during a landing accident, killing the passenger John Marshall and seriously injuring the pilot/ owner Maurice Hammond. The former Royal New Zealand Air Force Mustang was acquired by Hammond in early 1997 and restored by him over the following four years, making its maiden flight on 14 July 2001. By the end of October, Maurice was on the road to recovery following surgery at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
