Talk to those who were I involved in the earlier years of aircraft preservation in Britain, and a number of familiar themes come up. "No-one told us we couldn't" is one. There weren't people around to tell those preservation pioneers they couldn't set up their own flying museum, or acquire a particular airframe. They just got on and did it. Another favourite was the use of a bit of subterfuge. Even at major museum institutions, senior figures found that the best way to push projects through was simply to get on with them in the absence of official permission. That way, when the top men found out, it was already too late to call a halt.
