From the prototype's first flight, the SM79 was able to demonstrate its capabilities. For a time the Sparviero was considered the fastest medium bomber in the world. This naturally led to the fascist propaganda of the period publicising and emphasising its performance to the maximum extent possible, with the conquest of a series of records in significant categories and long-distance flights that were known in Italy as 'raids'.
