Living in the great city of Sheffield, somehow discussion of the era when nuclear war seemed an ominously real possibility has an added piquancy to it. I say that because the capital of the 'Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire' was, of course, the setting for 1984's apocalyptic BBC drama Threads, still unrivalled as a harrowingly devastating portrayal of atomic conflict and its aftermath, its visceral power undimmed with the passage of time. Quite the reverse, some might say. Given the recent fuel supply debacle, those scenes depicting panic-buying as hostilities broke out between the US and the Soviet Union seem to have a curious resonance.
