Once in a while, it's time for a magazine to celebrate - and, for Aeroplane, this is one of those months. It was in June 1911 that the first edition of a new weekly, The Aeroplane, made its appearance. In so doing, it's no exaggeration to state that it revolutionised the way aviation was reported. Always opinionated, sometimes waspish, the Temple Press publication soon started getting under the skin of industry and politicians alike. Sometimes its views carried much weight and continue to resonate down the years. On other occasions they were desperately wide of the mark. Its long-time editor, C. G. Grey, could be wilfully offensive, to put it very mildly, allowing his considerable personal prejudices on unrelated matters to taint his written output in ways that can be decidedly uncomfortable. But The Aeroplane was always required reading.
