GEORGE NEAL: THE 'CHIPPIE' MASTER

Born in 1918, George Arthur Neal got himself his private pilot's licence in 1936. He joined 'de Hav' in 1937, as an apprentice in its engine department. During World War Two, on leave of absence from DHC, he wrangled his way into pilot training in the Royal Canadian Air Force, following which he served as an instructor and flight commander in eastern Canada until the end of the war. He returned to DHC's engine shop in 1946, but in the winter of 1947 an unfortunate flight-testing accident gave George an opportunity. The test pilot survived but did not return to flying, and George became the back-up to DHC's chief test pilot.
