Only two men have ever been targeted as individuals for their roles in events that embarrassed the United States militarily. Osama bin Laden was hunted down and killed for organising and directing 'America's second Pearl Harbor,' the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, architect of the actual Pearl Harbor, was killed in an act revealed by the codename for the event, Operation "Vengeance! On 14 April 1943, Private Harold Fudenna, a member of the US Army's Military Intelligence Service special intelligence unit composed of Japanese-Americans (Nisei) specialising in translation of materials ranging from standard textbooks to captured documents, was assigned to translate message NTF131755, sent by the Japanese foreign ministry to diplomatic personnel in the South Pacific. Decoded, the message was an alert to a planned visit by Admiral Yamamoto to imperial forces involved in Operation 'I-Go,' the final Japanese attempt to wrest back control of Guadalcanal. The message was a detailed itinerary, including arrival and departure times at each stop.
