FUELLING THE FIRE

At about 05.00hrs that morning, we landed after four hours on patrol over north-eastern France. I got up late and was in rather a hurry to get to the mess for lunch. I collected my bicycle, and on my way out stopped by the ops tent to see if the battle order for tonight was already available. Since the invasion our squadron had generally been doing night work. It wasn't there, so I went away thinking, 'Maybe we'll have tonight off! No such luck.
