While the Daks over Duxford/ Normandy event has been grabbing most headlines when it comes to D-Day 75th anniversary-related flying activities, another spectacular occasion is taking shape. Running from 6-9 June, L-Birds Back to Normandy aims to bring together a record-breaking gathering of liaison aircraft used during the D-Day period - Piper L-4s, Stinson L-5s and others - in their invasion markings. At the time of writing, more than 60 such machines were scheduled to attend, coming from all over Europe: from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Most will naturally be L-4s, but joining them will be five L-5s, several Aeronca L-3s. two examples of the Fairchild Argus, two Fieseler Storch/Morane-Saulnier Criquet variants, a Stinson Reliant, an Auster and a Miles Messenger, amongst others. Rarest of all will be the sole airworthy Piper L-14 Army Cruiser, coming from the Fundacion Infante de Orleans at Cuatro Vientos near Madrid.
