The Hawker Nimrod was one of many designs that appeared from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s with the aim of replacing the venerable but increasingly obsolescent Fairey Flycatcher as the Fleet Air Arm's main fighter. That it managed to overcome years of confusion, indecision and vacillation between the Admiralty and Air Ministry to have a moderately successful career - even to go into service at all - is nothing short of a minor miracle.
