Reading David Halford's feature on the Berlin Airlift this month was a nostalgic experience for me, too. I was there for 2008's four-strong Dakota gathering at Tempelhof, a lower-key event than had originally been planned, but perhaps all the more memorable for it. Watching from the mound very kindly provided by what was then the Am Tower multicultural child and parent centre - as good a vantage point as Duxford's 'tank bank' - as Air Atlantique's G-AMPY made its approach to runway 27 left, you knew you were witnessing a little piece of history. The Ian Allan Travel tour group on board, including our correspondent, was partaking in the last long passenger flight by a British-registered DC-3 before pleasure flying in such aircraft fell victim to regulatory changes. And, of course, Tempelhof itself was to close that autumn, though not before another Air Atlantique classic in the form of its British Eagle-marked DC-6 had made its presence felt, on an even more evocative and poignant occasion.
