US Army set to test spider silk as an antiballistic material

The first samples of a spider silk produced by genetically engineered silkworms have been delivered to the US Army for independent testing. Kraig Biocraft Laboratories Inc of Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, announced in July 2016 it has won a contract from the US Government's Department of Defense (DoD) with the goal of developing a panel for an antiballistic vest made using the fibres (Dragon Silk). On 19 May 2017, the company announced it had supplied the first filaments and threads for evaluation.
