A tufted synthetic floor mat or carpet with a reduced tuft profile on its back surface has been developed by Milliken & Co of Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. In European Patent Publication EP3471590, the company describes a method of increasing the uniformity of the primary backing layer's (see Figure 4, 117) floor-facing surface and reducing its thickness by up to 100%.
