The integration of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) and the Internet is achieved by a gateway [13,15]. Several gateway discovery schemes/ approaches have been proposed that select gateway nodes based on certain Quality-of-Service (QoS) parameters such as path availability period, link capacity, end-to-end delay, etc. However, none of these schemes improves the overall network performance. To improve the overall network performance, it is necessary to select a gateway in such manner so that the path from source node to gateway should be lightly loaded, available bandwidth and residual energy should also be high. As MANET's are energy constraint, the residual energy plays a vital role in determining the network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a gateway discovery scheme that considers multiple QoS path parameters such as load, bandwidth and residual energy of a path from source node to gateway. The mobility and residual energy of participating nodes in a route are unpredictable; however these unpredictable parameters cannot be analytically derived. Under these circumstances, we utilize the potential of fuzzy-logic system to estimate the stability of the routes. A route maintenance technique based on fuzzy logic mechanism is used to deal with the frequent disconnection of route either because of too less residual energy or due to mobility of nodes. The proposed approach is validated over the prototype model. Results shown are outperforming to existing approaches.
