It is presumably one of the curiosities of our modern "infor- mation society" that the public at large is virtually unaware of the role of magnetism in everyday life. Ask your next door neighbors and you will find that some may perhaps associate magnetism with ship navigation using a compass; the majority probably consider the topic a long-forgotten elementary school experience.
