NASA's approach to human exploration of space is rooted in the Apollo program. Apollo was a vital part of the Cold War. It had the highest national priority, with the goal of demonstrating that the United States was the world's most capable space power. Young people were highly motivated by progress in space development and the idea that their future could lie in space-not only as space engineers, but as astronauts, space workers, or settlers. During the Apollo program, space prowess was the premier indicator of scientific and technological leadership.
