American President Lines announced that it was investigating the feasibility of using 45 ft containers in international trade. Two prototype units had been ordered by the Fruehauf Corporation of Detroit and would be tested throughout APL's intermodal system. Three C-9 containerships due for delivery to APL in 1982 have been designed to accommodate 45 ft containers, as well as standard 20 ft and 40 ft units.
