For terminal operators, the choice of crane controls and drive systems can have a major impact on the facility's whole operation. Capital outlay is always a significant issue as 10% of the total investment in a new US$7m crane goes on power electronics and motors, and productivity, maintenance and the lifecycle of a crane are all influenced by the choice of drives and controls.
