Anti-diabetic property of ethanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata in streptozotocin-deabetic rats

Oral administration of the extract as different doses(0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 g/body weight)significantly reduced the fasting serum glucose level in STZ-diabetic rats compared to the vehicle(dis- tilled water), but not in normal rats. This effect was dose-dependent. A similar result was seen with met- formin(0.5g/body weight). In the glucose to tolerance test, an oral administration of the extract at the same dos- es suppressed the elevated glucose level in normal and di- abetic rats, as did metformin. The ethanolic extract of A panic- Ulata possesses antidiabetic property. Its antidiabetic ef- Fect may be attributed at least in part to increased glucose Metabolism. Its hypotriglyceridemic effect is also bene- Ficial in the diabetic state.
