We report on a three-phase coarsening phenomenon in which an initially random dispersion of two phases in a matrix of a third phase evolves into two "microconstituents". The matrices of the microconstituents differ, as do the phase volume fractions within them. Once developed, the dispersed "microconstituent" coarsens, just as a dispersed phase in a two-phase system does. We describe the conditions that we believe lead to microconstituent development. We also provide an approximate description of microconstituent morphology and other microconstituent features. Experimental illustrations are given.
