Coverage of the economic downturn that emerged full-force in 2008 has permeated most media outlets, including professional and trade publications devoted to librarianship and the information industry. From articles in American Libraries [1] to Library Journal [2] and many others, it is evident that libraries and librarians are worried about and affected by the economic recession. Overall, the severity of the economic downturn is a matter of much debate, and how and to what extent it affects electronic resource librarianship remains to be seen. However, some things are certain: Budgets are shrinking and, often, one of the first cuts libraries make is to their collections budgets. It follows that electronic resources, which represent an increasing percentage of the collections budget, are at risk. According to the 2006-2007 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) statistics, "The average ARL library now spends just under 47% of its materials budget on electronic materials ... and 50 ARL libraries report that they spent more than 50% of their materials budget on electronic materials" [3].
