Conventional antipsychotic drugs increased risk for death more than did atypical antipsychotic drugs in elderly patients

Safety concerns regarding APDs have been long-standing, but warningsnfrom drug regulatory bodies have heightened attention on atypicalnAPDs. In a meta-analysis by Schneider and colleagues (1), higher risknfor death was associated with use of atypical APDs compared withnplacebo (odds ratio [OR] 1.54, 95% CI 1.06 to 2.23). ConventionalnAPDs are also associated with increased risk. Pooled data from 2 studiesnshowed a nonsignificant relative risk (RR) increase for death in patientsntaking haloperidol compared with placebo (1).
