Review: Amiodarone reduces risk for sudden cardiac death but not all-cause mortality in cardiomyopathy

The meta-analysis by Piccini and colleagues confirms and addsnto the findings of a 1997 meta-analysis of amiodarone in patientsnwith impaired cardiac function (1). Amiodarone reduced thenincidence of sudden cardiac death but did not appreciably reducenoverall mortality. These findings are consistent with the largestnand latest published trial evaluating amiodarone and ICDs, whichnfound that patients who received amiodarone had a risk for deathnsimilar to that of patients who received placebo (2). Patients withnclass III heart failure who received amiodarone had 44% greaternmortality (2).
