Improving Light Field Camera Sample Design with Irregularity and Aberration

Conventional camera designs usually shun sample irregularities andrnlens aberrations. We demonstrate that such irregularities and aberrations,rnwhen properly applied, can improve the quality and usabilityrnof light field cameras. Examples include spherical aberrationsrnfor the mainlens, and misaligned sampling patterns for the microlensrnand photosensor elements. These observations are a naturalrnconsequence of a key difference between conventional and lightrnfield cameras: optimizing for a single captured 2D image versus arnrange of reprojected 2D images from a captured 4D light field. Wernpropose designs in mainlens aberrations and microlens/photosensorrnsample patterns, and evaluate them through simulated measurementsrnand captured results with our hardware prototype.
