Thermal Behavior of Fire-Exposed Concrete Slabs Reinforced with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Bars

Experimental studies were carried out to investigate the thermal performance of concrete slabs reinforced with carbon and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars in fire. The effect of varying a number of slab parameters was studied to establish those that are critical for the fire resistance of these members. Test parameters in the experimental study included the reinforcement type, the slab thickness, the concrete cover thickness to the reinforcement, the aggregate type, and the effectiveness of supplemental fire insulation. Results indicated that the qualitative and heat transfer behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with FRP bars was similar to that of slabs reinforced with steel reinforcing bars. The thickness of the concrete cover to the reinforcement and the type of reinforcement were found to be key parameters that influence the fire resistance of FRP-reinforced concrete slabs.
