Many emerging fields such as biotechnology and renewablenenergy require functionalized surfaces that are “smart” andnhighly stable. Surface modification schemes developed previouslynhave often been limited to simple molecules or have been basednon weakly bound layers that have limited stability. In this Account,nwe report on recent developments enabling the preparation ofnmolecular and biomolecular interfaces that exhibit high selectivitynand unprecedented stability on a range of covalent materialsnincluding diamond, vertically aligned carbon nanofibers, silicon, andnmetal oxides.
