The pun is hard to resist: William Burgess has his roots in fresh fruit and vegetables. Born into a farming background in East Anglia, he joined the family business growing and packing carrots, potatoes, onions and parsnips in 1995, after qualifying as a chartered accountant. Burgess has seen the company through multiple mergers and acquisitions, and at 39, is now the chief executive of Produce World, a £150m turnover company employing 650 people and supplying many of the major UK retail giants with fresh fruit and vegetables.
