There was a time, in the dim and distant past, when software was either bespoke or boxed, and any organisation looking for accounting software had to wade through more than 700 applications. Today, there are both more and fewer options. Bespoke is rare, boxed is an endangered species, software as a service (SaaS) is a growth industry, and there are just dozens of packages to consider, and an ever-decreasing pool of suppliers. All of this is reflected in the approaches people take to the selection process, but so are the needs of their business.
