When finance professionals need to reforecast more quickly and more frequently, which software tools are up to the challenge? Some organisations rely on the tools provided by their accounting software, and some use spreadsheets, while others turn to specialist tools. How well they will meet your needs depends on what you want to achieve, and what you are prepared to compromise over. If you need to do cashflow projections for three to six months, and your accounting package is limited to six-week projections, you may want to supplement it. Some organisations happily produce projected P&Ls and cashflows using accounting software and a few spreadsheet models (see Accountancy, January 2009, p60); others want something more sophisticated. The bigger the organisation, the more complex information and the way it is collected is likely to become, and the more sophisticated forecasting techniques and procedures are likely to be.
